Greg Gorman//Framed
When I first moved to LA in the early nineties I was invited up to Greg’s studio to check it out and hang.    It was the new one he had built on Sweezer street, totally modern for the time.   State of the art, light streaming in everywhere.   It kind of felt like the pictures at the time.   A bit homoerotic, with hard lighting mixed with hard expressions.  Greg as a person, well  he was just...

Jeremy Scott 2012
Crazy as a ruler, but keep it coming.    Love the superbowl musical note tracksuits. I think my Rob Sheffield quote about pop culture and the past, cult of retro etc. is pretty applicable here.    Then again, who doesn’t love the Simpsons, KAWS did them and Pharrell and NICO ate it up.

Trisha's artist studio
My dear friend Trisha has done a zillion illustrations during the course of her career.   Fashion ads, playing cards, calendars, art shows and several books.   She’s doing her second children’s book right now which book author extraordinare Lauren Child (of Charlie and Lola fame) wrote for her to illustrate.  They make a great pair as well.   She is fab.   Trisha’s taste is...

artist Mike Kelley 1954-2012
FROM MY INSTITUTION TO YOURS A Personal Remembrance by John Miller On Wednesday, February 1 at about 11:00 am I received a telephone call with news I never expected to hear: Mike Kelley had committed suicide. The caller was Jim Shaw. His tone was matter-of-fact, grim and mournful, but also frustrated. I knew that Mike had been wrestling with personal problems, but expected that he would...

The art of shovelling snow
I never thought I would care, but now that I live in the country you need to know this stuff.   There is an art to shoveling snow.     Kill two birds with one stone and get a serious work out while you are at it.    If you are wearing tight black clothes you might even look fashionable while doing it.     All in good fun. 1. Stretch first Don’t be in a hurry to get outside. Stretch...

German artist IZA Genzken at the Saatchi
I was blown away by Berlin based artist IZA GENZKEN’s  (b 1948)  work at the Saatchi in London.   Her sculpture, paintings, and multimedia pieces were layered, beautiful, conceptual and “worked the room”    The color palette really spoke to me.   Hard to work with mirrors too and she rocked it.  The toddlers couldn’t take their eyes off some of the doll sculptures.

PLY unestablished furniture/ Berlin
They had this PLY furniture all over the SEEK show in Berlin.  Old lamps, tables, steel and wood.  Lots of character.   It was pretty cool. Reminded me of Prouve, it had that rustic, school room charm.

Josephine Meekseper also at Saatchi
I went crazy for her work at the MOMA in New York and now I love it even more.    Again, more work with mirrors, displays and A germany of yersteryear.   Kind of a nostalgia for anything from the 70’s . Her symbolism includes old catalogs, mannequins, orthopedic shoes, thick stockings and corsets.    Its funny when my friend said, whats up with the toilet plungers, I got that right away,...

Postmodernism in London
What is it?   Enlightenment, objectivity, one thing we can all agree on is that the world has become a much more subjective place, in all creative fields.     So whether you get it or not, you probably have an opinion about it and that is postmodernism.  From the show at the Victoria & Albert.
